FIRST GRADE

The students who haven´t sent homeworks, please do it as soon as possible during this week.

Read the rules of CAN  (poder)

AFFIRMATIVE

Can is used to express ability or to say that something is possible.
Can is the same for all subjects. We don't add an 'S' in the third person (like other verbs)
The verb that comes after Can is in the infinitive without to:
  • I can speak Spanish. (= it is possible for me to speak Spanish = I have the ability to speak Spanish)
  • He can swim well.
  • We can see our neighbour in the garden.
  • They can play the guitar.

Negative

To form the negative we add "not" after can to form one word: cannot.
We can also contract the negative to form can't. (can't = cannot)
  • cannot play the piano. We can't go to the cinema tonight.
  • She cannot speak French very well. He can't drive a car.

Questions

To from the question we change the position of the subject and the auxiliary verb.
The main verb is still in the infinitive without to.
  • Where can I buy an ice-cream?
  • Can go to the party, please?
  • Can you speak Japanese?
  • What can we do on Saturday?
Remember that you can use short answers:
  • Can I sit here please? Yes, you can.
  • Can you speak Chinese? No, I can't.
THIS CHART IS A SUMMARY OF HOW TO USE CAN

Hi Sama,
Just a quick email to say that sounds like a great idea. Saturday is better for me because I'm meeting my parents on Sunday. So if that's still good for you, why don't you come here? Then you can see the new flat and all the work we've done on the kitchen since we moved in. We can eat at home and then go for a walk in the afternoon. It's going to be so good to catch up finally. I want to hear all about your new job!
Our address is 52 Charles Road, but it's a bit difficult to find because the house numbers are really strange here. If you turn left at the post office and keep going past the big white house on Charles Road, there's a small side street behind it with the houses 50–56 in. Don't ask me why the side street doesn't have a different name! But call me if you get lost and I'll come and get you.
Let me know if there's anything you do/don't like to eat. Really looking forward to seeing you!
See you soon!

After reading the text, answer TRUE  or  FALSE
1. Samia and Gregor are going to meet on Sunday.

2. Gregor is going to make lunch.
3. They haven't seen each other for a long time.
4. Samia's life hasn't changed since they last met.
6. Gregor doesn't know the name of the side street his flat is on.

Here are four people talking about eating out. After you read, answer each question with a paragraph number (1-4).

1.The last time I went to a restaurant was about 2 months ago. My wife and I wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary with a good meal so we went to an expensive Italian restaurant in downtown Lisbon. We both had pasta to start and for the main course my wife ordered a steak and I chose fish. For dessert we both ate chocolate cake topped with fresh cream. Delicious!
2. I went to a restaurant yesterday evening with my sister's children. It wasn't very expensive and the menu was very limited. We all had a burger and French fries, and drank cola. It wasn't very good.
3. My boyfriend loves spicy food so this restaurant was perfect. The waiters were all really friendly and polite, and they played traditional sitar music which was very relaxing. The menu offered vegetarian dishes as well as meat dishes served with rice and a sauce - it depended on how hot you wanted it! I chose a mild beef curry but my boyfriend had a lamb 'vindaloo' - he also drank 2 liters of water!!
4. My class at the university went there last weekend. It's a very popular type of restaurant in my country. It generally offers one type of food (a kind of bread with cheese and tomato sauce) which you then choose what ingredients to add on top of it. I asked for olives and mushrooms on mine and my classmates each had something different so we could taste a piece of each person's meal.

Read about the climate in Madagascar on a travel website. Then choose true or false.

Madagascar – When to go

Madagascar has two seasons, a warm, wet season from November to April, and a cooler dry season between May and October. However, different parts of the country have very different weather.
The east coast is hotter and wetter, with up to 4000mm of rainfall per year. In the rainy season, there are strong winds, and these can cause a lot of damage.  Avoid visiting eastern Madagascar between January and March because the weather can make road travel very difficult.  The dry season is cooler and more pleasant.
The high, central part of the country is much drier and cooler. About 1,400 mm of rain falls in the rainy season, with some thunderstorms, but the summer is usually sunny and dry, but it can be cold, especially in the mornings, with freezing showers, and it may snow in mountain areas above 2,400m, and even stay there for several days.
The west coast is the driest part of the island. Here, the winter months are pleasant with little rain, cooler temperatures and blue skies.  The summers can be extremely hot, especially in the southwest.  This part of the country is semi-desert, and only gets around 300mm of rain per year.

Are you free this afternoon? Do you want to go out?
Jack writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.45 am
I just have to finish my homework, but I think I can finish it this morning. What do you want to do?
Tiffany writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.48 am
Let’s go into town. We can go shopping and then get a coffee. We can go to the new cafe near the library.  The cakes look great there.
Jack writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.50 am
You know I hate shopping. Why don’t we go to the park?  Kev and Rob will be there skateboarding.  We can have meet up with them.
Tiffany writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.52 am
I don’t want to spend my Saturday afternoon watching boys skateboarding! That’s so boring!  But we can go to the park for a game of tennis if you like.
Jack writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.55 am
I’m not really in the mood for tennis.  I don’t want to do anything too active. I want to just relax.  You could come to my house, and we could watch a movie.  We’ve got lots of good food.
Tiffany writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.56 am
I could watch a film on my own.  Why don’t I bring some board games round?  That’ll be a bit more fun.
Jack writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.57 am
Okay, that sounds alright, but my little brother will probably want to play too.  Is that okay with you?
Tiffany writes:
Saturday 7th April - 10.58 am
Sure.  Shall I invite anyone else?  I think Sophie is free this afternoon.
Jack writes:
Saturday 7th April - 11.00 am
Okay, you can invite her, but no-one else.  I don’t want too many people round.
Tiffany writes:

Fine. I’ll come round after lunch.  Is one o’clock okay?
